We are thrilled to announce the launch of the very first edition of the Handbook of Educational Psychology in Malaysia!
This landmark publication marks a significant step forward for the field of educational psychology in our country. Designed for academics, practitioners, educators, and students, the handbook provides a comprehensive overview of the profession — from its historical roots and evolving roles to its current practice and challenges within the Malaysian context.
In the absence of official recognition and regulation of educational psychology in Malaysia, this handbook serves as a documentation of the current landscape, offering:
A comparative analysis of educational psychology practice across countries including the UK, US, Australia, Singapore, and the Philippines;
Insights into the scope of services, professional pathways, and ethical practices in psychoeducational assessment; and
Recommendations for future development of the profession in Malaysia.
The Handbook of Educational Psychology in Malaysia also features personal reflections from educational psychologists currently serving in local contexts — highlighting the passion, resilience, and purpose that drive this growing field.

The Malaysia Educational Psychology Society invites you to our fourth Professional Sharing Series session of 2025 - featuring Ms. Queenie Liu who is also a member of MEPS!
In this session, Ms. Liu aims to provide an insider view of the essential contributions of educational psychologists (EPs) in Hong Kong. The key roles of EPs, the core competencies, the training and qualifications necessary to become an EP will be discussed. Additionally, school-based EP services in Hong Kong school settings, examining commonly used assessment tools and the differences between public and private settings will be mentioned. Furthermore, the current challenges faced by EPs in Hong Kong, and opportunities for growth and collaboration in the field will also be addressed.
Speaker Profile:
Ms. Queenie Liu is an educational psychologist who has extensive experience in working in local primary and secondary schools, tertiary institutions, as well as private settings in conducting psychoeducation assessments, giving training to children, adolescents and young adults in need, and providing consultation for parents and teachers. She is a full division member of the Division of Educational Psychology of the Hong Kong Psychological Society (DEP0237), a member of Register of Educational Psychologists accredited by Department of Health (AEP0130), and Chartered Psychologist from the British Psychological Society (Register number: 299134). In addition, she is a certified clinical user of a range of clinical assessments. She is also an accredited mindfulness teacher, and certified facilitator for a range of parenting provider.

This week marked a pivotal moment in the Malaysian educational psychology community as the Malaysia Educational Psychology Society - MEPS conducted our inaugural meeting with Bahagian Psikologi dan Kaunseling, Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia.
This strategic engagement demonstrates MEPS's commitment to advancing professional standards and expanding access to educational psychology services across Malaysia's educational landscape. We're encouraged by KPM's acknowledgement of the vital role psychological services play within school environments.
As we move forward, MEPS remains committed to working alongside government partners, educational institutions, and fellow professionals to ensure every Malaysian student receives the psychological support they deserve to thrive academically and personally.

In this session, Ms. Ann aims to provide an insider view of how international schools in Malaysia structure and implement learning support systems. Drawing from her 11 years of experience across Tier 1 to Tier 3 international schools, Ann will explore how access arrangements, school-based policies, and ecosystem-level factors determine the level of support students with learning needs can receive. She will also reflect on how these systems may serve as reference models for local schools seeking to enhance inclusive practices.
Speaker Profile:
Ann is an experienced international educator with over a decade of leadership and teaching experience across IB and IGCSE curricula. She holds a Master’s in Educational Psychology and is passionate about bridging school systems and student support. She focuses on how school systems and policy implementation shape access to learning support, especially for students with additional needs.

In this interactive session, Dr. Selvan will explore the functions of positive emotions specifically within teaching and learning contexts. Participants will learn practical strategies for eliciting positive emotions such as joy, interest, awe, and love in educational settings. Additionally, Dr. Selvan will introduce his recently published e-book, "Positive Emotions in Teaching and Learning," and share insights from his self-publishing journey.
Speaker Profile:
Dr. TamilSelvan Ramis serves as the Chief Design Officer (CDO) of Ideavit and is an HRDC-accredited trainer, educational psychologist, education consultant, and psychology lecturer. His impressive academic credentials include a PhD in Educational Psychology from Universiti Malaya (UM), a PGCert in Higher Education Practice (Distinction) from Sunway University, an MEd in Educational Psychology from UM, and a BA (Hons – Class 1) in Psychology from the University of British Columbia. As a Fellow of Advance HE (FHEA), Dr. Selvan is deeply committed to transformative teaching and learning, with more than a decade of experience teaching across various educational levels.
For our first session of this year, we will be exploring myths about teaching and learning and how educational psychologists can critically evaluate research claims and distinguish evidence-based practices from those lacking substantive support. To facilitate our discussion, we will be reflecting on Dr. Daniel Willingham's webinar on "Truthiness" in Educational Psychology which is available on YouTube.

The Sektor Pendidikan Khas, Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Sembilan (JPNS) conducted a specialised training session for members of the Malaysia Educational Psychology Society (MEPS) on the screening process for identifying students requiring special needs support. The training focused on equipping participants with the knowledge and skills to assess students effectively and determine their eligibility for special needs programmes and classes. Key topics included understanding the screening criteria, administering appropriate tools and assessments, recognising early indicators of special needs, and interpreting results accurately. This initiative aimed to enhance the capacity of MEPS members to support the early identification and placement of students in suitable educational settings.
We welcome new members to join our growing community of mental health advocates - your involvement will further strengthen our capacity to support students in need whilst gaining valuable professional experience in psychological assessment.
